Our team now parks farther away and has the opportunity to take a few more steps before getting to work! Did you know that each step you take contributes to the calories you burn throughout the day? It seems like common sense but it’s something we often don’t think about! According to Shape Up America, you’ll burn one calorie for every 20 steps you take. Shape Up America! encourages a goal of taking 10,000 steps per day to burn 500 calories, which equals a pound of fat over the course of a week.
I’m sure you’ve heard ideas like “take the stairs instead of the elevator” and “get off the bus one stop early” to get more steps in your day – and these are great ideas! But BumbleBar has some 21st century tips to add some pep in your step! Let’s check ‘em out…
- If you have a desk job, try scheduling a “walk & talk” collaboration with your coworker, instead of the normal conference room meeting. That way you can conceptualize ideas, solve problems, and discuss workplace matters, all while getting some exercise. You could go outside and enjoy the grounds around your job location, or, if the size of your workplace permits, just take a stroll around the indoor facility and explore new areas you haven’t spent much time at before.
- This one’s simple! Set a reminder on your phone to “walk the long way around” and make sure that it goes off a few times a day. Small reminders like this will instill the idea that just a few more steps makes all the difference!
- Here’s my personal favorite… download the Pokemon Go App! In order to play the game, you must literally walk with your smartphone to “catch” Pokemon in different locations. The GPS on your smartphone will not only keep track of your location, but it will keep track of your steps! It’s great exercise and fun. (Just make sure to follow the rules & always be safe!)
This tip seems like a no-brainer, but in today’s modern world, some of us need a reality check! If you need to talk with someone and they’re within 0.25 miles of you – don’t text, call, email, DM, or Skype them – walk over and talk with them! This will make you not only more sociable and personable – but you’ll definitely be getting a few more steps in!
If you have any other suggestions for us, let us know here. We would love to know how you get extra steps in throughout the day! And before we go, here’s one more healthy hint – no matter where your steps take you, always keep a BumbleBar by your side!
